Working to ISO Standards
With the understanding that quality education is a major requirement for a developing country like Ethiopia – specially when the country decides to become an industrial country with special emphasis laid on technical and engineering education playing determining roles in the future of the country- Zion College of Technology and Business has given a scope to this trend and has decided to implement ISO 9001-200 in its training system. In line with this decision the college has signed a contract agreement with an external independent and certified body to guide it to measure up to the quality standards set by ISO 9001. The college, therefore, is committed to achieve, maintain, and continuously improve the technical excellence, ethical values, and overall development of students and staff to global standards with its ever enhancing competence in technical and engineering education together with the research work that usually goes hand in hand with the training. It is, indeed, the firm belief of the college that ISO 900 quality system documentation will guide teaching – learning in a convenient predictable and generally acceptable environment enabling the college to, ultimately, streamline its operations, identify its problems, take corrective and preventive measures, and finally accomplish its objectives in systematized manner. The quality system, the college firmly believes, generally provides a clearer role and responsibility of students, faculty and staff while internal quality auditing allows each faculty and staff member to raise and resolve practical problems. It is with the understanding that an adequately implemented ISO 9001-200 system will focus on the reduction of quality problems, including student failures and fosters an environment for continual improvement that the college’s management body has, finally, decided to invite an external and independent certification body which provides an outsider’s point of view the body of which has currently become operational after having signed a formal and legal contract agreement with the college.
Before the implementation of the ISO project, the college’s management has made a point of establishing a steering committee made up of individuals from the college’s main business process heads with one ISO contact and coordinator in-between the certification body and the committee in order to facilitate and ease the preparation of the documents that would be requited later on.
